There have been a number of lists posted around the blogosphere about the Top 50 Australian bloggers or Top 100 australian marketing blogs etc.
As we couldn’t find an equivalent list for twitter – we put together a list of Australia’s most influential Twitterers.
Note: Shameless self promotion – this list was put together by @nickhac
This list is powered by BuzzNumbers:
The forumla we have used for calculating TwitterRank is:
TwitterRank = (Following / 10) + (Followers) + (Updates/100)
If you would like to propose an alternate formula we would be pleased to hear it.
The formula given and the twitter ranks don’t match up. E.g. based on the data given, bengrubb should have a rank of 1159, not 601. And the list is obviously not exhaustive.
@mediamum moved to the US of A
@wolfcat
Ah, “Australia’s most influential Twitterers”, hey? Well, If you’re interested in measuring *influence*, surely the number of followers alone would give you a fair idea of influence?
An example – I would argue that based on the numbers above, @richardgiles has slightly more influence on twitter than @lachlanhardy, as 17 more people are following the former.
Having said that, twinfluence.com’s ranks include “second order” networks, that is, if @guykawasaki is following you, you’re only a re-tweet away from reaching his 20000 followers, so surely that counts for something?
Number ‘FOLLOWING’ and number of ‘UPDATES’ is easily manipulated, so I don’t think they should be included in the methodology.
Good luck with the list! I’ll follow it with interest.
Also, I’d like to see your next revision include hyperlinked twitternames, so we can jump straight to the users on the table.
Missing that should make your list: nichodges, andrewbarnett, andrewsayer, jedwhite, funkycoda, MossyBlog (recent US resident)
Regards @rebel
Here’s some shameless self-promotion – I think I have a high enough rank to qualify
Account is joshsharp.
Nick
Quite surprised to see myself at #30 …
Have you had a look at http://twinfluence.com/index.php? Maybe some way to incorporate those figures?
AshleyAngell should be on your list 3381.8
so should GoldCoastGirl 1465.9
@Tim while I agree 2nd order is a factor, but when folks like Scoble and Calacanis go around just following everyone the odds of a RT from them is very limited.
Something is very wrong with your list, or your formula, or both.
Working on (Following / 2) + (Followers) + (Updates/10) the first 5 TwitterRanks should be as follows:
ProBlogger: 14443.9 (991 off)
jjProjects: 5839.7 (597 off)
duncanriley: 4684.2 (301 off)
mspecht: 3763 (264 off)
mpesce: 3534.9 (81 off)
Also, by the formula, my (@adnrw) twitterrank is 1201, which would put me somewhere in the mid-20s.
Self prom here
@suziecheel rank 874 657/10 +700 + 1165/100 –
Thx would love to be added
thx for the list
Awww, bumped doooown.
Also, while Malcolm Turnbull is in fact an influential Australian, and a user of twitter, at the moment with only 21 tweets I’m not sure that he’s really a Twitter influencer, you know? Not in a long term/volume/something sense.
It would be interesting to take your table here and do the same thing with twitter.grader.com for a comparison of how these individuals would line up on that. Apparently their secret recipe includes some second order stuff, but also “…a few others.”
Great work on the list! It’s interesting to check everyone out.
Definitely does not have an ‘a’.
Great list. @edwardharran is my personal most influencial twitterer.
Thanks for the feedback peeps
Just a heads up to all who have made comments on the forumula and other notes on saying the calculations are wrong.
The algorithm has been updated to
TwitterRank = (Following / 10) + (Followers) + (Updates/100)
Hopefully this clarifys any calc issues you have seen.
By the way – a huge thank you to everyone who has commented
Here’s quite a few to add, if we’re working purely off the maths – although granted, most fall outside of the top 50.
@drnic 1121.84
@joshanstey 599.9
@maxine 460.33
@pat (myself) 381.68
@toolmantim 381.29
@sutto 348.29
@spinopsys 307.95
@johnallsopp 293.06
@keithdon 291.14
@cama 261.09
@lachie 226.07
@scenariogirl 218.27
@stokely 215.78
@snapperwolf 201.54
@stevehopkins 196.75
@timriley 194.57
Hi Nick,
Great list and a good idea. Great to find more people on twitter.
I worked out my TwitterRank (@JoshAnstey) and I think I should be somewhere up on that list.
Look forward to seeing the list developed and updated.
Josh
I think I’d rank somewhere in the mid-70s, but I wouldn’t trust my maths on a Sunday night. I’d much rather someone else stuffed it up on my behalf
Cheers,
@smperris
Hmm. No sour grapes … I didn’t make the cut but my ranking is higher than some who did.
What is fun to see is the increasing number of Australians using this service now.
… and of course, numbers are one thing, quality of content another.
Good luck with this …
@mcannonbrookes sits on 402.88
@carlfish sits on 254.46
@andrewdotnich is on 375.09
I’m (@broady) on around 236.98
Nuts. Even with a personal score of 433 (based on following: 662, followers: 360, updates: 751) no one thinks me influential enough to suggest me… (@kimota)
S’ok. I’ll just be in the corner over here. Don’t mind me… (sniff)
It would be worth looking at
@ed_dale
@preneur
Ha ha, Just make it in I think, although possibly not with more people on the arrival.
@theunguru
269/10 + 279 + 1919/100 = 325?
Interesting.
Trying to understand the formula, and ultimately, how DO you measure influence. More Art than Science I suppose.
Ultimately, you are tracking engagement. If I post something, the more engaged my followers, the more influence I have. If I post something, and people ignore it, that suggests despite any inflated number, my engagement is less.
As for how you track engagement
- number of followers. Simple start
- number of @replies
- number of retweets
- the influence of people that follow you
I can’t see how many people you follow somehow reflects a persons influence. Nor how number of tweets has anything to do with it.
But good post – as flawed as it is (as they all are), it really gets me thinking, thanks Nick!
Definitely agree that @yonderboy and @andrewsayer should stay on that list.
Also think @joshsharp should be on there.
shameless self promotion:
@bmn – rank: 374.36
Hi Nick,
Cheers for this.
I’ve run the numbers for @steven_noble
455/10 + 457 + 1050/100 = 513
I read somewhere the data automatically updates? Figuring there’s surely a way to automatically grab Twitters by location too.
Cool list.
Just ran my numbers ( @matpacker ) and I think I rank in the 60′s with 544.33.
Cheers
Mat
Fab list guys – thanks for posting!
OOh yay. I rank.
Thanks for this list.
Why didn’t I think of it ?!?!
-Alister
Woot woot to all the Thirty Day Challenge Aussie men making the list!
-Michelle
self prom
allisonr
think I am around 501ish….
self-promotion here, but I don’t think I’ll even make the list, so it mightn’t matter anyway! LOL
@Miscmum
@secretGeek
nicely done.
Don’t forget @chrissaad !
@paullyoung
Great list. Stumbled it for ‘ya.
And, let me add to the shameless self-promos by asking if you can put
@shaicoggins
on your radar for your next update.
Have a good day!
@elearningnews – I’m not a big fan of rankings but I like lists. For what it’s worth, I think I’m about 560 using the magic formula.
I guess since I’m not on the list above (TwitterRank too low), I ought to plug my Twitter nick here.
Hope you don’t mind, @Nickhac!
Mine is @rajinder
Hi Nick!
shameless self prom… @angesbiz I’m in Melbourne
Hi Nick,
I’d join the self-promotion, but I wonder if you’re allowing ex-pats…
either way – @jkerrstevens
Thanks for this list Nick!
And for updating it. It’s nice to know I’m in there and I’m meeting so many cool connections from Australia!
A little shameless self promotion for @acatinatree.
I believe reciprocity of followers/ following is a key measure of influence…but nice work nonetheless.
@leesargent
I don’t know if you’re still updating – I only discovered this today
@indefensible ought to be on there
fekja! that list is awesome!
Bradley
@Silent_Brad is cool *blinks*
I guess i need more then 3 followers, before i make the list?
Just a few more from my list Nic ;
@sitepoint 20356
@benirawan 17156
@katekendall 4057
@rebeccalange 2732
@sarahprout 2407
@womencan 2363
@ricraftis 1598
@rechargelife 1339
@noblesamurai 1168
@shaicoggins 1162
@maverickwoman 1051
@marketingmag 961
@brendan_mcnally 814
By my estimation that should place me at 100 on the new list and that sounds about right ;->
Cheers, Brendan
PS. Definitely think ReTweet's are a solid indicator of real influence
So with 1,000 followers do I make the list yet?
@CraigThomler
By your reckoning, my TwitterRank = 1247
Which places me 62nd
Cheers,
Craig
waynemansfield is a convicted spammer. why are we acknowledging him here?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Mansfield
Fined and convicted by the ACMA for breaches of the Spam Act.
G’day Nick love the list and that I am on it. What the ACMA case represented, if any care to check is a test case of a new new law applied retrospectively. Some 4 years on, life moves on and Twitter is the new frontier of influence. Check my feedback and I think you will find it VERY POSITIVE…
Congratulations on being a thought leader and someone who isn’t influenced by “anonymous comments who want to attack tall poppoies..
More power to you Nick
Hi Nick, this hasn’t been updating the last few days. Has it stopped?
I am http://twitter.com/justcreative and at the time of writing have got 10600+ followers… think that would make me in the top 10 if you wish to update it?
Hey Nick, would love to add my name to it! @adenhepburn
Keep up the great work!
In the interest of not feeding spamming criminals, shouldn't Wayne Mansfield please be removed from the list?
Its good to see, that google worked ! i was actually looking for such a list!! i love australia ! havent been there yet though! am planning to go next year!
! mates!
"p33p this video!! & pass it along to your friends etc! they will surely thank you for it! :]"
